Security beefed up after attempted kidnapping

Two weeks ago a UKZN student narrowly escaped being kidnapped on Birkett Road, Scottsville when the occupants of a white Toyota Yaris with no registration plates stopped her while she was returning from the library to her residence. She escaped unharmed and police have opened an inquest docket.
Another female student was held at knife point by a man wearing a red and black hoodie on St Patrick’s Road last Sunday morning. The student was returning to her residence after an all-night study session when she was accosted. The attacker escaped with her lap[top, wallet and her Samsung phone.
Mi7 security patrolling the campus area was alerted and responded to the student in distress. The company managed to locate the vehicle in Poland Road an hour later.
Mi7 Security boss Nobin Karien said security has since been beefed up around Scottsville and the UKZN campus with a shuttle service being provided for students studying during late hours. SAPS spokesman Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said police had increased patrols in the Scottsville, Hayfields and Alexandra Road precincts.
However, Ngobese dismissed as fake some reports being circulated on social media that children are being kidnapped from around He warned that posting or forwarding fake reports could land irresponsible social media users in trouble with the law.
“We urge residents to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station before circulating unverified false posts as it causes panic within the community,” he said.
