Pietermaritzburg welcomes India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi

His Excellency, President of the Republic of India, Narendra Modi, graced Pietermaritzburg with his presence as he travelled in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi on his fateful train journey on June 7th 1893.

Narendra Modi had boarded a train at the Pentrich Train Station at 11:30am where he was earlier welcomed by Pietermaritzburg’s Mayor Chris Ndlela, KZN Premier Willies Mchunu, provincial MEC for Economic Development and Kwa Zulu-Natal ANC chairman Sihle Zikalala.

Prime Minister Modi travelled in the train that had departed from the Pietermaritzburg Pentrich Station and arrived at the Pietermaritzburg Train Station shortly after.

At the Pietermaritzburg Train Station, Narendra Modi officially opened the Gandhi Exhibition and laid a wreath at the Gandhi plinth.

People from near and far had congregated to welcome His Excellency President Modi to Pietermaritzburg to document his journey from the Pentrich Train Station to the Pietermaritzburg Train Station.

The crowd had waited eagerly in anticipation and excitement at the Pietermaritzburg Train Station with banners welcoming President Modi as he happily waved to the crowd before he could leave to the Civic Reception at the Durban City Hall.
