Maritzburg Sporting presentation evening

Recognizing the talent of many destitute children around the Pietermaritzburg community, Maritzburg sporting president and member of the SAPS K9 unit David Pillay has afforded boys from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to play soccer.
Guest speaker at the presentation evening, Faith Nzimande, an administrator for the SAPS K9 unit spoke to the boys about careers and inspired them to also consider a career in the SAPS. Faith highlighted the dedication that David showed towards the boys, explaining that David went the extra mile for the boys and treated them as his own children.
“David would do anything for them as he acts as their father figure. The boys come first in his life always and that is certainly admirable,” Faith said.
The soccer team which consists of under 11’s, 13’s, 15’s and 17’s developed in 2002 and runs solely on sponsorships.
Some of the areas that the children reside in are Sobantu Village, Copesville, Panorama Gardens, Haniville, Swapo and Site 11.
The boys train religiously twice a week at the Northdale Stadium and are coached by David and fellow members of PADSA. The boys are educated through soccer on how they should live a drug free, alcohol free life.
David said that the main objective of the sporting club is to keep children off the street through educating them in sport. “Many of these children would have never thought it would be possible to have a sporting career. They train very hard to excel in soccer and being awarded would further motivate them to achieve higher. They are ecstatic that the presentation evening is centered around and their achievements. No one goes empty handed because the Maritzburg Sporting recognizes every single player on the team,” said David.
