Practical, beautiful, powerful F-Pace

The marque’s practical sports car combines sporty handling and dramatic beauty with everyday practicality and efficiency. It’s a glorious marriage.

With the SUV market expanding at a rate of knots, it was inevitable that Jaguar would eventually produce its own version – and while it’s a radical departure from its normal line-up of sleek motor cars, it’s certainly no less desirable.

Porsche and BMW and Mercedes have long offered some rather fabulous, award-winning offerings in this segment, so Jaguar designers had their work cut out to produce a masterpiece of their own.

They succeeded admirably. The F-Pace has already chalked up a dedicated – growing – fan base, as well as a clutch of awards.

With its flowing lines, its achingly beautiful silhouette, its immaculate driving performance and that cavernous boot space, I found little, if anything, to complain about.

The F-PACE offers a choice of refined, efficient diesel or petrol engines, including the new Ingenium diesel range. All deliver a dynamic driving experience and responsive Jaguar performance. They all come with Stop/Start technology and smart regenerative charging – harvesting kinetic energy from braking to charge the battery, for maximum economy, especially during urban driving.

My F-Pace was the new Ingenium R Sport (2.0-litre, 132kW, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel). With seriously advanced technology and all-aluminium construction, it delivers impressive fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It’s also 20kg lighter than equivalent previous generation engines, and intrinsically more efficient. Jaguar reckons it consumes about 5.3 litres per 100km if you’re swanning around in the automatic version doing a combined cycle, and 4.7 if you’re on the extra urban trail. You’ll achieve the 0-100km/h dash in a time of 8.7 seconds, and your top speed is 208km/h.

The R-Sport’s interior is divine, the perfect blend of sportiness and practicality. Love the comfy, form-fitting supple leather sports seats with contrast stitching, and then there are the metal R-Sport treadplates and the R-Sport steering wheel. Very cool!

Even cooler – an optional extra, and you can choose from 10 colours – is the Phosphor Blue Interior Mood Lighting around the centre console, door signature lines, door releases, and door bins.

The technology on the F-Pace is outstanding. Adaptive Dynamics responds to match the conditions and your driving style – and steering and body movement are analysed up to a mindblowing 500 times a second. Electronically controlled dampers then constantly adjust to optimise the suspension settings and maintain the vehicle’s dynamism and comfort.

The 8 speed automatic transmission is fabulous: highly responsive, smooth and efficient, delivering rapid shifting for effortless acceleration and overtaking. Boogeying up Town Hill, for instance, was poetry in motion.

You’re spoilt for choice, by the way, when it comes to the F-Pace’s optional panoramic glass roofs, fixed or sliding. For greater privacy and to reduce excessive heating under intense sunlight, every panoramic roof is fitted with an electric blind as standard.

You won’t get much change from the starting price of R869,100, and while the car is extremely pretty, the all-wheel-drive beauty is also – if you have the nerve – fine in a bit of the rough stuff, with a ground clearance of 213mm when fully laden.
