Raging fires blanket city in smoke

Blankets of smoke from the veld fire at Bird Sanctuary (Liberty Midlands Mall)

Fires have been reported in the veld next to Liberty Midlands Mall, Woodlands, Northdale and Bellevue. The fire department confirmed that as at 1pm no fires were reported at the landfill site.

In Bellevue residents are battling high flames fuelled by strong winds.

Soaring temperatures, extremely dry and windy conditions all contributed to the wild fires.

Fire department Deputy Chief Jugathesan Padayachee said fire trucks have been deployed to various areas within the city since earlier hours of the morning

“We’ve received call outs from parts of Woodlands, Northdale , Bird Sanctuary  and Hayfields,” said Padayachee.

He said currently two trucks have been deployed to Hayfields to extinguish fires at the veld fire in Murray Road and Woodlands.   He stressed that the fire department is under strain and fire-fighters are attending to fires as soon as possible.  “The team is out in various parts of the city working tirelessly to contain the fires,” he said.

Chris Gillbert, Managing director of Rural Metro Emergency Management Services said the province has experienced dry weather of the past 10 days and this together with strong winds contributed to the fires.

“All available water resources need to be dispatched to combat the possible spread of veld fires”.
