ATM robbery foiled by quick-thinking security boss

Bevil Carey of KTT Secuirty reenacting the attempted theft at the Nedbank ATM

“I was in my car in the parking when I saw a man pull a lady’s card as I drove towards them. When I got there I asked her if she was with him and she said no but the man kept on saying he was her friend. I quickly got a hold of him and dropped him to the floor,” said Carey.

Being in the area at the right moment was not by chance, said Carey, and that his team had been conducting surveillance there after being tipped off that the Nedbank ATM at the shopping centre had become a hotspot for suspects who targeted local shoppers who attempted to draw cash there.

“When I searched the man I found five bank cards on him which I assume were from other victims” said Carey.

He added that when he asked the woman to check if he had recovered the right card she discovered that her card had been switched and that the suspect was in possession of the correct card which Carey retrieved.

“These crooks are so quick and clever nowadays that you can never be too sure and have to check properly,” said Carey.

Carey expressed his shock at how calm the suspect was when he was apprehended and when the police came to arrest him.

“He laughed and told me that it was his bad luck and that he should have just went home after he was successful in town instead coming to this area,” said Carey.

Carey offered some valuable tips for when you need to draw money from ATM’s saying that people need to be extremely vigilant.

“Always check your ATM before you use it. Don’t use an ATM without a security guard and its best to block the numbers when inputting your pin,” stressed Carey.

Captain Gay Ebrahim of the Mountain Rise Police confirmed that the matter was reported to the police and the SAPS made a swift response to the call and arrested the suspect on site.
