Metal dealer unfairly tarnished, says family

The Rising Sun scrapyard in Allandale

On Thursday police arrested the owner of Rising Sun Scrapyard in Raisethorpe for being in the possession of alleged stolen metal items including manhole covers, water meter covers and copper cable.

The man was charged and released on bail pending further investigation.

The owner’s son spoke to Public Eye on behalf of the family saying the incident has cast unfair aspersions on his dad.

“We are not the source of this crime in the area and the van that allegedly brought to the scrapyard does not belong to my father. It belongs to the other person who was arrested by police. The items brought by the bakkie had not been weighed by our buyers, so no transaction had taken place,” said the son.

Explaining the suspected stolen items found in a container on the property and seized by police, the son said only three items were questionable.

“Three items were found, two manhole covers and a municipal frame that collectively did not weigh more than 20kgs and had a value of less than R100,” said the son saying the business had steps in place to curb the risk of accepting suspected stolen goods.

He said the copper cable seized by police were from a business that was in the process of relocating.

On Thursday a team of police officers from Mountain Rise’s special project’s unit led by Warrant Officer Dees Pather, raided the scrapyard, leading to the arrests and seizure of suspected stolen goods. Local security companies and the Sector 4 Community Forum were involved in the operation.

Nkosi Ngubelanga from Municipality Safety and Security said the city has been dealing with service delivery backlogs due to stolen water meters and manhole covers.

“It’s an issue that has caused distress. Residents have been left without basic equipment, such as manhole covers due to theft,”said Ngubelanga.
