Two local schools were represented by their bright, buzzing learners at a Provincial Level Schools Spelling Bee Contest at Arthur Blaxall recently.
Mohamed Tauheed Bayat from Allandale Primary and Dhiviya Perumal from Orient Heights Primary competed in the Spelling Bee which tests the students’ ability to memorise vocabulary and asks the participants to learn approximately 1074 words. The learners are tested orally.
The principal of Allandale Primary, Sharon Rangiah, said, “Mohamed is an excellent learner who is a hard worker and loves what he does. He is an outstanding and eager learner who did what he had to.”
Mrs Ishwarlall, his former Grade 6 educator who helped Mohamed learn his words, said “He spent time learning during breaks and his parents also played a part by helping him at home.”
Mr Peru Govender, principal of Orient Height Primary, spoke highly of Divya who is the school’s 2018 Head Girl. He said, “She excels in all her subjects, is dedicated, hardworking and focused.”
Mrs. C.T. Pillay who is a Grade 6 educator at the school along with Mr. R.V. Moodley, the acting deputy principal, put in hours of training to ensure that the selected students were prepared. Dhiviya Perumal was selected to represent the Umgungundlovu District at provincial level and came close to winning but got the final word (ricochet) incorrect.
The scholars along with their teachers attended the awards on the March 1 at the Fernhill Hotel and Conference Centre where they received awards for their achievements.
