City educator wins big at SciFest

Marsha Kalika

Marsha Kalika, who is currently the chief education officer at the KZN Museum, scooped the award after presenting her workshop on climate change that was initially devised for the FET syllabus.
With an honours degree in Environmental Science from Rhodes university Kalika said her passion for science began at a very young age where she was seeking something to “challenge” and “spark” her interest. She said that over time it was evident to her that certain topics like climate change, and water dispensing would be vital points and an area for opportunity.
Kalika then became interested in teaching to “communicate science” and to show young people that subjects of science were not difficult. She then completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
During the workshop, Kalika taught classes with over 70 learners graded for the FET syllabus (Grade 10-12) but was also faced with the challenge to teach primary school children about the Ecosystem.
“I had to adapt the syllabus and make it relevant to the age group so they could understand. The festival committee saw it as going beyond the call of duty, but I saw it as teaching this group and making them see that science is not a foreign concept,” said Kalika.
Modest in winning her accolade, the science educator said the award meant she was doing “something right” as the Museum’s Chief Education Officer and planned to grow her department by spreading the word of science.
“We currently have 18 school in our outreach programme. We want to grow that number and encourage more science expos and workshops to grow scientific minds and opportunities,” she said.
