Hadebe breaks silence

After a continuous uproar from city residents, civic organisations and political parties including sectors within the ruling ANC, embattled municipal manager Sizwe Hadebe has finally broken his silence on allegations that he interfered with a large tender and manipulated the interview scores to favour a preferred candidate for a top job in the organisation.
The allegations stem from a viral audio clip circulating on social media purportedly of Hadebe instructing a subordinate to ensure the tender process for a large engineering tender was halted and that a certain female chartered accountant was scored higher than other applicants.
Hadebe, who tentatively spoke to Public Eye, said he will respect the process and outcome of the investigation that was launched and reported on last week by Public Eye having revealed the alleged scandal the previous week.
“I can’t say much. I have been cooperating and abiding with the process of the investigation and I will respect the outcome of the findings,” said Hadebe.
When questioned if he will vacate his position during the investigation, he said he cannot confirm anything further until the investigations have been concluded.
Insiders at Msunduzi Municipality revealed to Public Eye that, despite the investigation of the recording, the female mentioned in the audio clip, allegedly a former trainee at Auditor General had taken up the vacant post of senior manager, assets and liabilities early last week.
Pressure mounted on Mayor Themba Njilo both last week and this week despite an announcement by city hall that he will be spearheading an investigation into Hadebe’s conduct.
Councillors tore into Njilo at a recent finance portfolio committee meeting demanding decisive action and more forthright communication about the incident and the investigation. Mayor Njilo said the matter has been referred to the legal department saying “the City will not turn a blind eye to allegations of corruption and nepotism and will be addressed at a full council hearing today (yesterday) as a confidential item”.
