Mother’s Day weekend trip ends in tragedy

A Pietermaritzburg family returning from a trip to the beach lost their lives in a horror crash on the N3 between Lynfield Park and Ashburton on Saturday night when a bus carrying 120 passengers veered off the road and collided with the Nissan Sentra that the family was travelling in on the opposite side of the road.

Dolly Govender, 55, her youngest daughter Shanelle Govender, 23, niece  Hannah Padyachee, 20, and Linton Mahommed, were declared dead on arrival. The eldest daughter of Dolly Govender, Pamela Udhaeraj  said the family was returning from a trip to the Winkelspruit beach  as she wanted to spend time with her mother and  siblings.

” We always go out on trips like this. I just wanted to spend time with my mother and sister. When we reached Pietermaritzburg I realised that they were no longer behind us so I checked with my cousin driving behind them. At that point my cousin  phoned and said there is a huge accident. A little while later my son phoned and said it Charlane’s car and four people are dead on scene. My family were travelling with my sister Charlane. We turned the car and immediately went to Ashburton,”said  a distraught Pamela.

Mitchell Mahommed, the  father of Linton Mahommed said he was battling to come to terms with the tragedy.

“My son was one in a million. He was the youngest of my two sons and   dedicated to the ministry. I don’t know what to say yet there is so much to say…..he was really one in a million. He worked at G.U.D filters and was a respectable boy,” said Mitchell.

Charlane Govender, 26, the second eldest daughter of Dolly Govender and girlfriend of Linton Mahomed was rushed to Edendale hospital where she is in a  critical condition.

Hannah Padayachee was the head girl at Heather Secondary school in 2015 and is currently studying law at Varsity College.

The funeral service of Dolly Govender, Shanelle Govender and Hannah Padyachee will take place on Tuesday the 15th of May 2018 at Truro Hall from 10:30am. It will then proceed to Mountain Rise Crematorium at 13:30pm.
