Ramadaan message from the Jamiat ul Ulaima

Ramadaan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, sees Muslims around the world fasting from dawn to dusk.
During this blessed month, Muslims abstain from consuming any form of food or drink and engaging in intimate relations from the break of dawn to sunset.
Ramadaan gives one the opportunity to reflect, refocus one’s attention to the Almighty, purify the soul and practice self-restraint.
Muslims are called upon to use this month to audit their lives in the light of Islamic guidance and make the necessary changes. We are to make peace with those who have wronged us, strengthen ties with family and friends, rid ourselves of bad habits, establish a close connection with the Creator and suppress our passions and desires.
The Arabic word for fasting (sawm) literally means “to refrain”. Refraining is not confined to food and drink, but also from evil thoughts, words and deeds.
During Ramadaan, every part of the body must be restrained. The tongue must be restrained from backbiting, gossip, vulgarity and hurling abuse. The eyes must be restrained from looking at that which is forbidden. The hand must be restrained from theft and causing hurt or harm. The ears must be restrained from listening to idle talk or obscenity. The feet should be restrained from moving towards sin and dens of vice. In this manner the true essence of fasting is achieved.
Fasting is thus not merely physical, but is rather the total commitment of both body and soul to gain closeness to the Almighty.
We take this opportunity to wish all Muslims a blessed Ramadaan.
