Trouble torn Msunduzi municipality will now be subject of an investigation by the office of the premier. This was confirmed by ANC KZN Provincial Task Team Coordinator Sihle Zikalala in an interview with Capital Newspapers. “We have decided that the Office of the Premier should handle the process when it comes to Msunduzi Municipality,” Zikalala said. The municipality is already the subject of a number of investigations by bodies including the Special Investigations Unit. There have been allegations of tender irregularities, jobs-for-pals arrangements and misapropriation of public funds levelled against the municipality. Rumours have also surfaced indicating that current city manager Sizwe Hadebe could be suspended following the leak of an audio clip that had a voice which many claim is his.
Spokesperson in the office of the premier Thami Ngidi said the office would be willing to conduct an investigation if needed. “We do not have a problem with investigating capacity. If there are expertise that we need we will source them from outside,” said Ngidi.
The decision for the premier’s office to investigate the municipality is seen as evidence of the worry over the decline in governance at the municipality.
