The close-knit suburb of Mountain Rise was left reeling on Saturday morning in the wake of a family shooting that left a woman dead and an older woman in serious condition.
A 47 year-old resident Nazeer Ahmed Yusuf appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Court on Monday morning facing charges of murder and attempted murder. The accused who was remanded in police custody following the fatal feud on Friday night will make his next appearance in court on Tuesday. Magistrate Vincent Ncanyane advised Yusuf who wished to represent himself in the matter on his right to obtain legal representation either via legal aid or a private attorney. State Prosecutor Rene Padayachee instructed that Yusuf see district surgeon.
Captain Gay Ebrahim, Mountain Rise SAPS, spokesperson, said, the relative who sustained a gun shot to the stomach died at the scene while the other woman who was wounded in her thigh was rushed to hospital. “A silver Browning firearm, one magazine and rounds of ammunition were also seized at the scene.”
The bereaved family declined to comment.
