The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) officially handed over funds raised from the 2018 race to its six official charities; the Durban and Pietermaritzburg Community Chests, Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC), Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust, Hospice Palliative Care Association, Wildlands and World Vision SA.
Over R5 million was raised through the Comrades Marathon’s fundraising platform and their own efforts with R490 000 of this in direct voluntary donations from entries.
R3,9 million was raised through the Race4Charity initiative and a further R100 000 was raised through Amabeadibeadi and other charitable product sales, as well as R600 000 as a result of the individual charities own initiatives.
The CMA’s two top Race4Charity fundraisers were Dean Wight and Grant Cummings who each raised more than R300 000 for the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust.
CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn, said the fundraising and subsequent charity handover was incredibly inspirational.
“The Comrades Marathon Charities handover is always a special occasion for us. In as much as this marks the closing chapters of the 2018 Comrades Marathon, it is also an incredibly inspirational moment for all those who put their hearts into charitable giving,” said Winn.
