Hunters and dogs caught – and released, again

Five men aged between 23 and 35, from Pietermaritzburg, were nabbed with their Greyhounds on Friday at the Mackenzie farm in the Lion’s River/Curry’s Post area.
It is suspected they were on the hunt or were on a poaching exercise.
“The owner phoned us when he spotted them, but when we arrived, they didn’t appear to have captured anything. We believe some of them fled when they saw our cars,” said Magma’s Musa Shabalala. He added that the gang’s car had been hired and the driver was not a suspect.
Midlands Community Safety, in conjunction with the Howick SAPS, farm watch members and Magma Security, were all involved in the apprehension of the gang.
The five men were handed to the Howick SAPS and their eight hunting dogs taken to the SPCA, where they spent the weekend. The men appeared in the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Monday but just as in the previous case in June, when 28 dogs and 17 men were nabbed in the Karkloof area, and released with not even a slap on the wrist, this gang also walked out of court with no penalties.
The case, apparently, was “not enrolled at the court” and there will be “further investigation” (as was said last time as well). The men were released and collected their animals from the SPCA.
Magma Security said despite the disappointing outcome, they would continue their ground work. “There have been discussions about poaching in past CPF meetings, and people are not happy,” said Shabalala.
