All female chess tournament a success

The Umgungundlovu Chess Association (UCA District Federation) together with Umngeni Knights Chess Club hosted a free Females Chess Tournament “Battle of Queen’s” at Howick Indoor Sports Centre recently.
The tournament attracted 50 females who came from Brutville, Durban, Imbali, Mafakatini, Edendale, Camperdown, Northdale, UKZN, Howick surrounding areas. Lindokuhle Ngubane, UCA chairman, hailed the event as a success saying five rounds of the two sections in the juniors and adults section were played.
“The first position for the juniors section was won by Serina Naidoo from Northdale and the first position for the adult section won by Nolwande from Durban. Everyone who played was given a medal for taking part in this event. We would like to extend the invitation to anyone who is interested in starting their own Chess Club in the Umgungundlovu District to contact the UCA. The tournament is open to everyone who would like to play. We are also calling on organizations, businesses or individuals to help us with donations to buy food for players on the day on with 100 spaces available,” said Ngubane.
The UCA is a non-profit organisation and is also seeking financial assistance to buy a laptop and projector.
“These items will help us teach those wishing to learn how to play the game and help the affiliated clubs to grow as we are planning to have a league in 2019 that is going to be played during the schools holidays,” said Ngubane.
On September 1, the UCA will host the Umgungundlovu Spring Chess Open at Maritzburg College.
To participate entries are as follows: Section A R100, Section B R50.
