Family wants answers

A week after the death of Ntandoyenkosi Mabaso, 13, who drowned at Mountain Rise Primary School, his family is still searching for answers.
Ntandoyenkosi’s elder brother, Siyabonga Mabaso, said that every time he spoke about his brother’s death, he felt heartbroken to know that his brother died.
“When we visited the school last week, the day after my brother drowned, his teacher told us she thought he was just playing in the water when the incident occurred. I do not understand how this happened. There are many stories going around. We want the truth and we need closure. The wounds in our hearts are still fresh. For now, we just want to focus on his funeral,” said Mabaso.
When the Public Eye had visited Ntandoyenkosi’s home, his grandmother expressed grief that nothing they do will bring their boy back.
“If we do an interview with the newspaper, will it bring him back? I don’t want to do any interviews. No matter how many interviews we do, it will not bring him back,” said his grandmother.
Muzi Mahlambi, spokesperson for the KZN Department of Health, said they received a report from the school on the incident.
“We are working with police as well and investigating the matter. We take this opportunity to pass our condolences to the grieving family.
“We accept the sentiments of the parents, but it is natural that when your child dies, you won’t want to accept what you’re being told at face value.”
“No school would conduct lessons under the watch of a person who wouldn’t know how to do all those things. The child has been swimming for years. This was just an unfortunate incident.”
Mountain Rise Police Station’s Captain Gay Ebrahim said investigations have not concluded yet.
“We are still awaiting reports and there has been no conclusion to the case as yet,” said Ebrahim.
Ntandoyenkosi’s funeral is set to take place on Sunday.
