Technology innovation centre mooted

There is growing support for the development of a technology innovation centre in Edendale and leading government officials and academics are willing to work with local stakeholders to get the project off the ground.
Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan, the keynote speaker at the uMzansi Youth in Business 4th IR Breakfast held in the city over the weekend, underlined the importance of skills acquisition as one of the key features that will help in driving economic growth in South Africa, particularly as the country moved towards embracing technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“The issue of skills is a big challenge. Skills institutions still need to be upgraded and investors, particularly on the technology side of things, would say our skills base is too narrow. There are opportunities that we don’t normally think about. In that sense, we need to think outside the box and open our minds. We have a great level of opportunities for those who were excluded from them. We have to invest a lot more, use the energy and the bright ideas of young people among us that we should be tapping into,” said Gordhan.
Professor Marwala, Africa’s leading AI researcher and who is also the vice chancellor at the University of Johannesburg, gave a gripping presentation on how AI was changing the world.
Mbongeni Zuma, Mzansi Youth in Business (UYB) CEO, said business leaders needed to embrace technology and accept it in the presentation of business plans and proposals.
“We are proposing that a technology innovation centre be established in Greater Edendale, where business can access research and skills to harness the power of technology,” said Zuma.
