Pietermaritzburg residents have vowed to continue protest action until they receive answers from the Msunduzi municipality on why their informal dwellings were demolished on Monday.
Protesters burned tyres and blocked the R33 near Copesville on Thursday and Friday morning. The angry residents claimed the land they built their dwellings on in Ezinketheni does not belong to the Municipality and are demanding answers from municipal officials.
Many residents said they lost much of their belongings when their homes were destroyed. Despite being dispersed on Thursday morning by Public Order Police, the protesters were in action again on Thursday evening and Friday morning. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said her child’s school uniform and books were destroyed in her informal dwelling on Monday. “How are we and our children expected to survive without a home,” she asked.
Attempts to obtain comment from the municipality is ongoing
