‘We don’t want bail for suspects’ – Mchunu family

Speaking in public for the first time since the arrest of the six men, including local councillor Nkosinathi Gambu, the family said they were still hurt by Mchunu’s murder on May 11 this year.
“Our beloved Maqatha was killed mercilessly by criminals without any reason. As the family, we welcome the arrest of the suspects and want to make it categorically clear that we are against the granting of bail to the suspects,” said family spokesperson, Bonginkosi Zuma. The family had enlisted the assistance of a legal team for the case.
Zuma added the family had noted that among the arrested was a local councillor and this had reinforced their suspicion that Mchunu’s killing was politically motivated. He added that they were equally concerned that Gift Zungu, son of uMgungundlovu Deputy Mayor Fucwana Zungu, had also been implicated in Mchunu’s killing.
Zuma said while the family appreciated the work done by the police in arresting the suspects, they were hoping the police would do the same with other killings. “There are many families that have been affected by the killings and our appeal is that they (the police) apply the same kind of energy and arrest those involved so that families can have closure,” said the family spokesperson.
He also expressed gratitude to party president Cyril Ramaphosa and other political figures who had assisted the family after Mchunu’s killing.
