Domestic worker gang nabbed

An all-women gang posing as domestic workers and ransacking suburban homes in the city has been nabbed.
The three women, aged between 30 and 35 years old, apprehended for aggravated robbery and house breaking, briefly appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Each facing a 15-year-imprisonment (mandatory sentence for housebreaking), the trio adamantly opted to defend themselves, rejecting legal representation from the state.
It is alleged the group of women operated with the modus operandi of pretending to be domestic workers who were scouting for employment in the Prestbury and Town Bush areas.
Once employed at a residence, the women would ransack the homes making away with appliances, jewellery and undisclosed amounts of cash.
During the trio’s last attack, it is alleged one of the women assaulted a security guard at a residence she worked at while trying to flee the scene with stolen goods.
The investigating officer, warrant officer David Mngadi, submitted to the court the trio was arrested after Townhill SAPS was tipped off about a house robbery in a Prestbury complex on Saturday, September 1.
Mngadi told the court more suspects and evidence linked to the women’s robbery operation was still outstanding and further investigations were pending.
State prosecutor, Rene Padaychee, said the state was yet to attain and verify information regarding the women’s profiles, that there were outstanding suspects and therefore would be opposing bail.
“The state still needs to determine the accused profiles and for police to submit further evidence pertaining to the investigation,” said Padaychee.
A bail hearing is set for Wednesday, September 19.
