Elderly targeted in northern suburbs

A spate of residential robberies has Northdale residents concerned for their safety.
On Thursday afternoon, a 74-year-old woman on Munireddy Road, was tied up and locked in her wardrobe while her home was ransacked.
It is alleged an unknown man entered the property under the pretence of being an electricity maintenance man from Eskom. Once in the woman’s house, the man is said to have held the 74-year-old at knife point.
The brazen robber made away with house keys, bank cards, food and electrical appliances.
The family has asked for their name to be kept out of the paper for fear of a reprisal attack on them. The elderly woman has since been moved to another relative’s home.
“Although she is shaken, she will be okay,” the nephew said.
In another incident, an 80-year-old man was robbed twice in one week on Mothie Singh road. Neighbours who spoke to Public Eye said the area has been plagued with crime.
“It is becoming a problem, from the smallest things to the biggest things are stolen, like a hose pipe or expensive appliances,” said Lydia Govender.
Previously Public Eye reported on an unknown man doing the rounds in the northern suburbs preying on unsuspecting elderly women selling their prized family jewellery for cash.
The man, who is known by various aliases, is said to take jewellery worth thousands of rands from the women.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the targeting of elderly members of society should not be tolerated and a joint effort from SAPS and community should be made to combat crime.
Gwala further confirmed no arrests have been made.
“After liaising with the respective police station I can confirm one case has been opened and no arrests have been,” said Gwala.
