Newholme Primary School promotes reading

Newholme Primary School commemorated Heritage Day with a colourful and impressive display of talent from its Grades R to 7 learners on Friday.
The event was staged in conjunction with the school’s dedicated involvement in the Readathon, a literacy awareness campaign to encourage reading.
The school used the event as a fundraising drive for learners to collect donations on the amount of reading they completed in the specified period of time. All monies from this campaign will be used to buy books for the school library.
Jay Rangiah, from Hargraves Library Service and the Sports Veterans’ Association, was the Guest Speaker at Friday’s event. He stated that reading is the key to primary school, and, indeed to later education. As such, reading demands the utmost care and thoughtful planning if it is to serve its broadest purpose as an aid to child growth and development. For a learner, reading opens up new worlds, reveals new ideas and suggests new opportunities. For a school, reading is a gateway to a different, better future.
In his address, Rangiah said, “The future that faces all learners at this school is challenging and exciting. It is my belief that both the educators and the learners will meet these challenges and will grow from strength to strength in the fulfilment of its aspirations and progressive programmes, and more especially, in the maintenance of the high principles that it is known to espouse.”
As a mark of respect and a show of appreciation, Rangiah has donated R 10 000 worth of library books to the school. A winning school actively promotes reading.
