Acapella rivalry sparks exam fears

There are mounting fears that matric examinations may be disrupted at the Sobantu High School if the feud between rival acapella groups Abadlovozi and Amarota is not resolved swiftly
Tensions between the two groups, according to locals from Sobantu, began in 2016 and forced the end of the year competition to be cancelled, but erupted last month with the killing of three members of Abavodlovozi by unknown people.
Speaking at the funeral of twins Asanda and Siyanda Dlamini on Saturday, local school teacher Thulani Xaba said he was hoping for the speedy resolution of the matter.
“We have seen this before at the school where learners from Tamboville were attacked as well as Sobantu learners. This is the only no-fee school in the area and it would be sad if some of the learners were unable to attend because of this tension,” said Xaba.
Ward councillor Sandile Dlamini also acknowledged that there had been problems before and he had initiated a number of meetings of parents from Tamboville and Sobantu but this had not borne any fruit.
He said following the killing of three youths they would embark on a truce initiative so that differences between the two groups were ironed out.
“This demands that all of us as community members put the shoulder on the wheel so that any further spilling of blood is avoided. No one should be allowed to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the circumstances,” said Dlamini.
“Part of the initiative to deal with the problem in the area would be to call for a more capacitated police station,” said Dlamini.
