The bail hearing for the six men accused of the murder of slain ANC political activist, Musawenkosi “Maqatha” Mchunu, has been adjourned to next Tuesday.
The six men, Gift Zungu, Sikhanyiso Zimu, Sfiso Mbelu, Ayanda Ngubane , Mlungisi Zimu and Msunduzi Municipality Ward 10 councillor, Nkosinathi Gambu, made a brief appearance on Monday in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court where the matter was set down following the appointment of a new magistrate.
Gambu, who has been a councillor since 2016, briefly took the stand and told the court he needed to be given bail as he had several responsibilities, including a house, a wife, a two-year-old daughter and a five-month-old son.
He further told the court that he was not only looking after his own children but the three children of his deceased sibling, who are between the ages of 18 and 22.
In the past week, the matter has come under focus with ANC supporters packing the court’s public gallery and chanting slogans for “justice to be served” within the vicinity of the court while draped in ANC regalia.
The matter continues on Tuesday, October 23.
