About Public Eye Pietermaritzburg
Was launched in October 1999, with a free distribution fortnightly of 12 500 into the Eastern suburbs of Pietermaritzburg. Two years later the distribution changed to weekly, and the circulation upped to 25 000. In 2004 the newspaper increased circulation to 30 000 which has remained steady ever since. The paper is aimed at LSM 4 – 9 and has substantial retail sector support. The paper is distributed door to door, on a Thursday on the Eastern side of town, and focuses on the events happening in the community it serves. The Public Eye, like the other two community newspapers in the stable, has an aggressive Corporate Social Investment programme, which seeks to add value and make the necessary interventions that demonstrate our commitment to these values. We have partnered with local stakeholders on social upliftment campaigns such Love to Live and recently joined hands with provincial government in Sukuma Sakhe campaign which is aimed at dealing with social ills including drug abuse, teen pregnancy and crime. Our involvement in these campaigns have endeared us to the local communities who regard us as their champions.
